Observations On Patients' Temperaments And Situations
COGITO ERGO SUM, COGITO!
Character Name: Urahara, Kisuke
Character Age: 41
Character Position: A therapist at Karakura Institute. Strong evidence he should also be a patient.
Character Description: A large man made smaller through personality and slouch due to
a slight childhood case of polio forcing him to walk with a cane, eyes shadowed by the
broad rim of his hat, Dr. Urahara is powerfully intuitive and disturbingly adaptive.
He is the most free-spirited of the therapists employed at the institute. He
considers himself popular, although he has no real desire for popularity. While not
necessarily generous (he is actually a tightwad in many respects), Urahara is amiable and
easygoing. He is genuinely interested in the problems of others, possessing an uncanny
ability to perceive problems and hidden desires in others and correct them, by providing
or taking away. It's surprising Urahara even has the job he does; he's not a typical
person; although this may actually be why he works at the institute, it being a place of
peace for Urahara also. He is too idealistic and impractical, and far too neologian for
everyday, run of the mill living in an outside environment. It isn't that he can't
function in society—he could easily force himself into a normalized routine. It's just
that Urahara would prefer not to, as he prefers to completely and wholly engage himself
in Fixing Other People, to the exclusion of everything else if he so chooses. There is a
reason his hair is so fly-away unkempt. Loyalty is not a quality Urahara puts much merit
in. Equality is. He believes in evolution and the march of science, but thinks Social
Darwinism is the realm of the unimaginative and filthy imperialists. He disapproves of
socialism on account of liking stuff too much, but it sounds good in theory.
These are mostly his positive qualities, however. Catch Urahara on a bad day, and you
will be facing down a man who is lazy, impractical, unrealistic, emotionally restrained,
and possibly melancholic. He becomes easy easily swayed by vice habits, especially those
Polite Society frowns upon.
In short, a cynical idealist and a lackadaisical workaholic; Urahara is his own oxymoron.
Character History: Urahara was born to a generally upperclass family, rather rich and
part of the aristocracy, and because of this he spent his childhood never working,
allowed to study anything and everything to his heart's content. Also to go on trips to
famous cities and suchlike.
At any rate, he eventually graduated from a decent university—being particularly clever
making up for sheer laziness—with a doctorate. His doctorate is actually in Theology. He
used to be a schoolteacher.
Then large groups of parents suddenly got mad at the way Urahara was teaching their best and
brightest about the problems of prostitution and the male-female gender imbalance. About
evolution. About Modern Medicine, such that it was. Needless to say, Urahara was quickly
expelled from the position. He became depressed and sought out aforementioned
prostitution, drinking, and opium to relieve the pain. If asked, he'll say the pain was
mostly the lack of money. Truly, he missed being able to teach and to help.
Urahara graciously came under the employ of the lovely, lovely, lovely (have we mentioned
lovely?) and also kind Ms. Unohana. This was likely because Urahara suffers from a case
of psuedologica fantastica, related to but very little like pathological liars. Urahara
has a strong tendancy to make lies which are outrageous and yet contain a matrix of
truth—such as that humans can fly—with no provocation. He understands that these
statements are lies, and when confronted about them will readily and pleasantly admit
this. The strongest difference between Urahara's disorder and compulsive lying lies in
the fact that Urahara doesn't lie for any self-aggrandizing purposes, merit or emotional
reasons. He just does.
In his employment, Urahara has been challenged by family members of patients in the past for
his slightly unorthodox methods; his therapy is sensitive and instinctual, rather than
bookish or strict. He believes the only way to solve a human problem is through human,
not lofty, solutions. He prefers a reflective and reflexive method of psychotherapy,
rather than preventative. He allows circumstances and events to unfold around his
patients, without interfering. Only after the situation has come to a close does Urahara
swoop in with comforting words and a warm if slightly wry smile, responding by asking his
patients how they felt about the situation, what they want done about it, and then
deciding on the best course of action on terms they can both agree with. A patient can
only improve if they have a desire to.
Most of Urahara's actual work is pawned off on his 'assistants,' specifically Ururu. They
stick around for their own reasons, and Urahara uses them as a chance to escape for a nap
in the gardens.
